This season has started very well so far and I hope it keeps on staying fairly warm with no unexpected freezes. There is still much to plant for the summer! I will keep you updated with all varieties of vegetables that I plant so you know what to expect and can determine your favorites.
I have been hard at work pruning our blueberry bushes this week. Pruning allows for greater air flow through the bush which will help prevent disease pressure in our patch. It also allows the bush to produce larger, sweeter, higher quality berries. I am very excited for our berry patch this year! Every year we mulch our bushes with wood chips and sawdust from the farm, this mulch has turned into great compost over the years. Now our soil quality is the best its ever been which will give us very flavorful berries! Our berry season starts in June! We grow 18 different varieties in our patch!
In the high tunnels I have many varieties of tomatoes already blooming. I have two heirlooms, Cherokee Purple and Orange Valencia. I have a red hybrid, Empire. And I have 2 cherry varieties, Black Cherry and Sun Gold. High tunnels offer perfect conditions to grow tomatoes. I always have great results from my early tomatoes! I also grow my spinach, arugula and herbs in here. The tunnel offers refuge to the crops and protects them from harsh weather conditions which will produce higher quality produce. You can expect the most tender and delicate greens and herbs with great flavors.
Beef
I am currently fully stocked on my All Natural Black Angus Beef and I am ready for the beginning of the market season. We have been producing the highest quality beef we have ever seen here at the farm. We will offer our beef through the CSA, at the Farm Store and at the Farmers Markets we attend throughout the season.
CSA
I have been pleasantly surprised with all of the support we have had from our new CSA members! Everyone is excited to get the season started with fresh produce! (So am I) The CSA currently has reached half of the capacity we hope to have for our first year. So if your interested in the CSA please sign up! On April 16th we are hosting a Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food meet and greet. We are inviting you to come meet all the farmers partnering in the CSA and learn about everyone’s farm in person. More information on this will be released soon!
